The bosses have identifiable parts that can be destroyed to disable some of its capabilities and carve out a safe space. Your ship only has one gun, but it's got this fascinating design that gives you fine control both over which direction you're firing and over your spread, which ends up being really important: You might want to focus fire to take out a particularly dangerous laser, or scattershot to take down incoming missiles.
