I haven't played nearly as much of this game, but as others have pointed out it's remarkable how much the spin dash adds in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to the feel of the thing. Also, I think adding Tails was a big deal too! Even though the mechanical impact isn't enormous, it really made that game stand out in the flood of character platformers, where going back to this one it's a little samey to me.
