This was such a huge thing and then it mostly went away. While I was in high school I kind of got into this during a computer camp, where they had a machine in the student union. Super fun. But also hard to look cool playing it, and a pretty hefty investment to get good at it. That same student union building was the first time I got a blister playing Ms. Pac-Man on their modded cabinet that ran fast.
