Sir John Suckling, early 17th century.
Learned in sixth grade. Played with tons of people through high school, and it's now a perennial favorite for my wife and I. Possibly my favorite classic card game. Very portable because the board is unnecessary, but the board (and variety or boards) adds that pleasing tactile element. I like the rotating asymmetry.
